INDIAN PASSPORT

The passport is a valuable document. It is advisable to also keep its photocopy in a safe place; without the relevant details, issue of a duplicate passport may be delayed. If lost, damaged or destroyed, the facts and circumstances should be immediately reported to the nearest Indian Mission and to the local police.

A passport is normally issued valid for maximum 10 years.

Form for renewal of passport of issue of new passport is same and it can be downloaded from website of the mission.
A new passport application must be submitted along with:
  • The old passport along with its photocopy,

  • 4 recent (4cm x 4cm) coloured photographs with preferably sky-blue background,

  • Valid Tanzanian Resident/Work Permit or Dependent Pass, along with its photocopy,

  • Fee as applicable, and

  • The application form should be properly filled up, leaving no columns blank.

One may apply for a passport with an ordinary booklet or a jumbo booklet (more pages).

It is an offence to furnish false information in the application. Passport facilities may be denied on grounds of suppression of factual information, submission of false particulars, wilful damage of passport, and for making unauthorized changes in the passports.

The Government of India have introduced machine readable passports (MRP) from 26th August, 2007.  Effective from the date, the passports are prepared  by printing system located in India.  The process for delivery of passports takes up to four weeks from the date when the application is filed.  The short validity passport in emergency cases is issued with a validity of six months under Tatkal Scheme.  Tatkal service fee is charged if request for passport on emergency basis is made under the Tatkal Scheme.  The short validity passport in case of emergency will be issued at the request of the applicants.  However, applicants are advised to apply for MRP at the earliest.  The MRP is not an extension of the earlier passport and is therefore, charged separately.

For a duplicate passport, a detailed report of loss/damage/theft, a copy of the FIR, and an affidavit/undertaking in the prescribed proforma, should be submitted along with the application.

An Emergency Certificate (EC), as a one-way travel document, may be issued in lieu of a passport to authorise an Indian national to enter India if, while abroad, his passport has been lost, stolen, damaged, impounded or revoked, or he has been refused a passport, or he has to be repatriated to India.
