1. Dr. Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India, accompanied by spouse,
Smt. Gursharan Kaur paid a State Visit to Tanzania from 26-28 May, 2011.
He was accompanied by External Affairs Minister, Shri S.M. Krishna,
National Security Adviser, Shri S. Menon.
2. The last Prime Ministerial visit was by Shri I.K. Gujral in September, 1997.
3. During the visit, the Indian Prime Minister was given a ceremonial welcome,
with a 19-gun salute and was personally received at Julius Nyerere International
Airport by the President of Tanzania, the First Lady and top officials from
the Tanzanian Government.
4. During the visit, Prime Minister addressed 300 distinguished Members of the Indian
Community on 26th May, 2011. Prime Minister held detailed discussions with the
President of Tanzania on 27th May, 2011 and announced an additional LOC for
US$ 180 million for development of water supply projects in Dar-es-Salaam and coastal
region and grant of US$ 10 million for projects in development of social and
education centres, a vocational training centre for Zanzibar and a grant of
US$ 1 lakh to Zanzibar for projects of laboratory equipments for schools.
5. The following decisions were taken and Agreements signed during the visit :
1. The Prime Minister of India announced of extending the third Line
of Credit for US$ 180 million for development of water supply
projects in Dar-es-Salaam and coastal regions.
2. The Prime Minister of India announced a grant of US$ 10 million
for projects in social and educational sectors, projects for
which are to be identified by Tanzania.
3. Agreement on Double Taxation and Prevention of Fiscal Evasion [DTAA]
4. Joint Action Plan between National Small Industries Corporation
Ltd [NSIC] and Small Industries Development Organisation [SIDO]
5. Memorandum of Understanding on Preliminary Joint Venture
Agreement between the Board of Trustees of the National Social
Security Fund, Tanzania and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare
Tanzania and M/s. Apollo Hospitals Enterprises Limited, India
6. The Indian Prime Minister also held a Joint Press Conference with the
Tanzanian President, Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete which was followed by a State Luncheon.
7. The Indian Prime Minister jointly inaugurated with Tanzanian President
the India-Tanzania Centre for Excellence in Information and Communication
Technology [CoEICT] at the Dar-es-Salaam Institute of Technology where a
Param Super Computer with tele-education and tele-medicine facilities
has been set up by C-DAC, Pune. He addressed an audience of over 500 Tanzanian
students on the occasion. The CoEICT has ten Community Information Centres
spread out in different regions of Tanzania.
8. Dr. Manmohan Singh and Mrs. Gursharan Kaur were seen off at the airport
by President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete and the First Lady – Mrs. Salma Kikwete,
Tanzanian Prime Minister Mizengo Peter Pinda, Foreign Minister Bernard
Membe and several top officials of the Tanzanian Government on May 28, 2011
