Visa
All foreign nationals require a valid visa to enter India.
Visa application forms can be collected, free of charge, from the High Commission during office hours on all working days, or downloaded from the website of the High Commission at www.hcindiatz.org.
Processing Time
Visa to a Tanzanian national is normally issued the same day, and for the residents of other countries in 3-4 working days. However, processing time in certain cases and types of visa may be considerably more.
Types of Visa
Specific visas are granted according to the purpose. The main types of visa are as below. Please contact the High Commission for further details if the purpose of the visit is other than these, such as yoga, voluntary work, mountaineering, or other expeditions. The same visa application form is, however, applicable in all cases.
- Tourist Visa: is given for 6 months normally and may be multi-entry. Frequent visitors to India, and those connected with tourism trade, may be granted tourist visa for 1-5 years. The applicant is required to provide documentary proof of his financial standing, or the travel schedule and original confirmed return ticket, as well as a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate. Tourists travelling in a group of not less than four organized by a recognised travel agency may be considered for grant of collective tourist visa. Tourist visas are non-extendable and non-convertible.
- Business Visa: Multi-entry, valid for one or more years. A letter from sponsoring organisation indicating nature of business, probable duration of stay, places and organisations to be visited incorporating therein a guarantee to meet maintenance expenses etc., should accompany the application. (All applicants should produce the details of their business activities, VAT/TAX paid during the last two years and the Business Licence issued by the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA). Business Visas for up to 2 years for technicians/experts going to India in pursuance of bilateral agreements or joint venture projects having government approval.
- Student Visa: is issued for the duration of the academic course of study or for a period of five years whichever is less, on the basis of firm letters of admission from Universities/recognised colleges or educational institutions in India, and proof to source of financing. Change of course of study and institutions are permissible.
- Transit Visa: single or double entry, issued for a maximum period of 15 days for each entry, to bona-fide transit passengers only. Evidence of onward travel to a destination outside India is required. Cannot be obtained from immigration counters at ports of entry in India.

- Visa to Missionaries: is valid for single entry and duration as permitted by the Government of India. A letter in triplicate from sponsoring organisation indicating intended destination in India, probable length of stay, and nature of duties to be discharged, should be submitted along with guarantee for the applicant’s maintenance while in India.
- Journalist Visa: is issued to professional journalists, photographers and film-makers, and requires additional information to be furnished. The applicants on arrival in New Delhi are required to contact the External Publicity Division of the Ministry of External Affairs, and in other places the Office of the Government of India's Press Information Bureaus. These applications should be submitted at least 8-10 weeks in advance.
- Conference Visa: is issued for attending conferences, seminars or meetings in India. A letter of invitation from the organisers of the conference is to be submitted along with the visa application. Delegates coming to attend conferences may also combine tourism.
- Employment Visa: is issued to skilled and qualified professionals or persons who are engaged or appointed by companies, organisations, economic undertakings, as technicians, technical experts, senior executives etc. Applicants are required to submit proof of contract, or employment or engagement.
Long Term Visa: may be issued to a person of Indian origin for duration of up to 5 years, on a case by case basis.

Visa fees are non-refundable, except in cases where a visa already issued is cancelled thereafter.
To Apply: The following are required to accompany the visa application.
- Passport valid for minimum 6 months beyond the date of intended departure from India. The visa validity period may not extend beyond the passport’s validity expiry date.
- Valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate.
- For third country nationals, proof of long-term (at least 3 years) permanent residence.
- The Applicant should personally sign the application. The application may also be entertained by post, or submitted by another person on the applicant’s behalf but with a due letter of authority from the latter.
- Application forms should be filled completely, correctly and legibly; incomplete and illegible forms may not be entertained
Miscellaneous
- The provisions herein are general; other provisions may apply in specific cases.
- The High Commission reserves the right to call any applicant for a personal interview, and may ask for additional information at any stage during the processing.
- Submission of the application along with prescribed fees does not necessarily guarantee issue of visa. The High Commission reserves the right to refuse visa to any applicant without assigning any reason, as well as to decide the duration of visa.
- The visa fees are non-refundable, even if the application is withdrawn or the service refused.
- Validity of all visas is counted from the date of their issue.
- The requirements or guidelines herein, and the fees structure, are subject to change without prior notice.
- In a case of fraud or misbehaviour, the passport will be suitably endorsed/stamped.
- All persons holding a long term visa (validity exceeding 180 days) are required, within 14 days of arrival in India, to get themselves registered with the nearest Foreigners Registration Office. However, for a long term Business Visa holder, registration is required only well before the 180-day period provided the planned stay in one visit is to extend beyond 180 days, or else registration is not required at all.
